Like the corners of my mind

My hero in 9th grade:

I'm glad so many of you all could identify with my dorky picture. Maybe I was some sort of cool like Hassan says. I was definitely arty and definitely into the CURE big time even though they peaked like 5 or 10 years earlier. All my good friends were dorky too and none of us really judged each other. I think I will post some more dorky pics. I may even be able to dig up a picture of Hassan that he doesn't know I have. At any rate I've given Chris a bunch of embarassing pictures of me and friends that he can hopefully scan so I can put them up here. I love humiliating myself for everyone's enjoyment. But seriously - it's so funny. Here's a timeline of my fashion progression:

  • Born 1977 - Wore regular baby clothes including onesies
  • 1983 - Started kindergarten - Wore pink courduroy overalls and hair in pigtails. Got giant old-lady glasses
  • 1988-1992 - Akward phase - went from wearing old lady clothes to wearing stirrup pants. Also wore giant oversized character t-shirts. Somewhere in there are slouchy socks and BUM Equipment sweatshirts. Somewhere in this era I grew 5 inches, but weighed the same amount, thereby instantly losing weight.
  • 1992 - 1993 - CURE Phase. Goth all the way - in my own low-cost way. Got contacts in 10th grade I think.
  • 1994-1995 - The Grunge Era - wore lots of flannel and jeans. Started dating boys. I think I had a lot of short skirts. I had one baby doll dress because they were in and my mom used to tell me I looked homeless. I worked at a hardware store part time and sometimes when I wore booty shorts the customers would hit on me. Ew.
  • 1994-1995 - Went to Catholic school. Wore uniforms during the week. Wore booty shorts in the summer. Occassional ho-bag outfit in this phase. Also wore concert t-shirts. Lots of jeans and t-shirts...Kate and I used to dress up sometimes for no reason.
  • 1996 - 2000 - College. I wore jeans basically all the time. Also went to the thrift store and bought amusing ringer t-shirts and wore them. Shopped at Deb and Joyce Leslie. Drank a lot of beer - gained weight. Wore skanky bar outfits sometimes.
  • 2000-2001 - Started working. The shock of corporate clothing hit me full force. Purchased interview clothes.
  • 2001 - Present - Pretty standard clothing here. I mostly wear jeans still. Though I like to dress up too. I try to keep a few skanky bar outfits around in case a girls night out pops up. I also go to the grocery store in workout clothes sometimes. People call me m'aam sometimes. Ew.

So anyway, this week is crawling by. I watched a few more episodes of Queer as Folk before I fell asleep last night. Falling asleep to Queer as Folk gives you interesting dreams. My friend Leah is a huge fan of the show - so I've started watching it. So far so good. Lots of guy on guy action - it's like porn without the stigma of actually renting porn. Nice.

Sometimes that Brian guy looks hot and sometimes not so much.

I think our Fashion Histories mirror each other fairly accurately, down to the year (I was born in '77, too). Yeeeikes! I shall ponder this. xo MJ

I was also born in 77. My fashion timeline reads almost the same, except you have to throw in some huge Jodi Watley earrings in somewhere around 8th grade.

Queer as folk- porn without the stigma. Totally. I saw a few episodes a while ago when I had free HBO or Showtime or whatever it's on. It was very entertaining.

I think they should add an extra s in the title.

Yep - you and I went to school at the same time. Did you graduate h.s. in '96? I remember the girls going through the same phases. We all wore lots of flannel/plaid in the mid-90s. The whole Abercrombie look came about for us in college. Before that, it was just plaid shirts, jeans, chukka boots and a barn jacket. Very Eddie Bower.

Queer As Folk: no need tellin' that I've seen all seasons but Season 3, when I didn't have Showtime. Will have to rent it. Queer as Folk is a British term for someone being "a little different, but then, isn't everyone....?" I think that's what I read, anyway.
