Rainy Days and Mondays
Always get me dowwwwwwnnn...
I'm not really down, but it is both rainy AND Monday. Blah.
On a happier note I recently purchased this at the Borders "3 for 2" table:
I really like this book by the Yarn Harlot. It has inspired me to begin knitting REAL gauge swatches, as opposed to casting on and then going "yeah that looks about right" then wondering why the Lelah boob part is big enough to house Pamela Anderson's knockers.
So I cast on a real gauge swatch with my Tess microfiber ribbon i bought at MD Sheep and Wool and I'm not quite getting gauge. I'm getting 23 stitches to 4 inches instead of 24 stitches to 4 inches. Do you think it matters? Is it "close enough?" I've casted on another gauge swatch with needles a size smaller to see what the difference will be. I'm hoping the tank top I'm going to make isn't big enough to be a car cover for my beetle.
I also got one of these in blue since it's as pospular as slap bracelets were when I was in middle school:
Remember the slap bracelet controversy? They supposedly slit someone's wrist.
On a totally random note I watched a few movies last week. Ones I didn't like: The Notebook, Kicking and Screaming. I usually like sappy romances and I have a girl-crush on really like Rachel McAdams, but the whole thing was too cheese for me. Kicking and Screaming? I really like Wil Ferrell, but this was pretty bad. Pretty bad.
One I did like: Elizabethtown. Now, Elizabethtown is as controversial as slap bracelets (You like how I tie that all together, right?) since i think people either hated that movie or loved it. I liked it. It made me teary eyed through a lot of it.

I liked The Notebook, maybe because I liked the book a few years back. I watched the movie and totally had a cry-fest. I LOVED Elizabethtown, it was a total tearjerker too, and it gave me lots to think about. But Kicking and Screaming? Eh. Not so much.

Yes! Slap bracelets! I seem to remember that wrist-slitting rumor and being scared of my slap bracelets once I heard about it.

I'm the same with gauge stuff. I usually just knit something and hope it fits. I have so many sizes of clothes in my closet anyway.
I liked the Notebook, though I can't remember exactly what it was about. A senile lady or something.

You're not alone with the crush on Rachel McAdams. I just saw Wedding Crashers and that was my first exposure to her. Very talented young lady. :)

I think with the 23 vs. 24 issue, the main thing is to figure out what the measurements should be (math is fun!)... i.e. at 24 st/4" if the pattern has you cast on 96 st, that will be 16". Now at 23/4", casting on 96 st will get you 16.7" - so it's a little extra ease, but maybe not too bad. Of course, when you add the front and the back together, it would be 1.4" too big, which might be bad. One trick I've done is to use the numbers from the next smaller size (so if the 96 st was for a Medium, the small would say 92), and that gets you pretty close.
Sorry there's so much math in this comment! And I loved snap bracelets, too :)

i still have slap bracelets! we had to get some for a show i did in college and when the show was over a bunch of us "stole" the bracelets. i loved those things. i also totally have a girlcrush on rachel mcadams. however, i am one of those people who hated elizabethtown.

Ugh. I never seem to be able to get a consistent gauge with ribbon. It's like knitting with plastic bags, every swatch measures up differently.
Also, your copy of Knitting Rules has a different cover than mine does. Weird.

You may just have inspired me to do a gauge swatch on my Tess Ribbon, too. I'll be curious to see your experiences with it.

I never heard the slapbracelet controversy, but thanks for the public service announcement. And amen to the sappiness/crappiness of the Notebook. I, too, like Rachel McAdams and I really like Ryan Gosling (did you know that they're dating in real life?) but I HATED that movie. So. Much. I thought it was because I was single and bitter, but you're married and happy, so I feel better :-)

Well, let me preface my comment by saying I am a SUCKER for sappy romance. That said, I teared up WATCHING THE PREVIEW for the Notebook. When I finally saw the actual MOVIE, I cried like a freakin' baby. I {{heart}} that movie. like, HEART. so good.
I also liked Elizabethtown. My roomate thought it was wierd and kinda throught it was torture to watch, but I dug it.

I luvvvv or er...really like Rachel Mcadams. I think that is why I decided to like cheesy over the top notebook...she is just so cute.
You know how I feel about Elizabeth town. I will forgive you as your netflicks friend.

Rachel McAdams also recently made the decision NOT to pose naked on the cover of a (I think) Vanity Fair issue that was supposedly celebrating new young actresses. As if acting and being naked have something in common? So MORE kudos to her!
