As I said in my last post, I definitely wanted to buy BrooksFarm and Tess at Maryland and they were the first booths I hit!

At the Tess booth I picked up two skeins of her SuperSocks and Baby yarn in a colorway I can't find on her website. It is a range of warm brown. This will be a manly baby sweater for Simon hopefully in her baby cardigan pattern.

Brooks Farm is always my favorite booth, and this year I was drawn to a different color palette. I usually am attracted to their blue/brown combinations but this year I got some reds and a neutral.

This is their Acero in a red colorway:

And here is FourPlay in a neutral and grey olorway:

I'm thinking a wide scarf or shawl in the Fourplay, since it lies so flat as a fabric. I'm not sure what to do with the Acero, but it's a fingering weight yarn, so I'm thinking some lacework will be in order.

I also picked up some natural Alpaca from Misty Mountailn Farms. I was going to make Mr. Lug a scarf and mittens or a hat out of this. It's so soft and a really manly natural color:

I feel I was fairly conservative in my purchases, but really got exactly what I wanted.

In other knitting news I finished my Tess Microfiber Ribbon tanktop and it only took me 2 years! I had actually completed the entire body a while back, but had to finish crocheting the straps. It turned out better and the fit isn't half bad. Pics of that up next!

All week I told people that I was trying to go to Maryland Sheep and Wool. Most people I talked to gave me that pleasant smile and "Oh, that sounds nice" that they would've given me if I said I was going to a comic book convention or a fish and tackle expo. Then I explained one thing to them that was universally appealing.

The ribbon chips.

Freshly-fried, thin-cut potatoes with sour cream, cheese, chives and jalepenos. Not for the faint of heart, or the waist watcher. A plate full of deliciousness. Everyone seemed to understand why I would travel to Maryland for a plate of those!

Not everyone understood how excited I'd be to run into old bloggy friends like these ladies:

Anne Marie and Lara

I was so glad to run into those two, Carrie, Lolly, Jess, Maya, Sarah, and Sarah (go team mommies). I didn't get to see anyone for too long, since I wasn't staying over this year, but I did get to say hello and talk to everyone for a few minutes and wander with people. If I saw you, and I lost you in the crowd and didn't say goodbye, I'm sorry! I had fun seeing you!

My sister-in-law Pat came down for the trip with me and we had a good time walking around, reconnecting with people and, of course, shopping. I'll post the haul soon - I was fairly conservative, hitting up the essentials (for me) of Tess and Brooks Farm.

I had a really great time, the weather was beautiful and the trip seems to have given me some knitting mojo back. I pulled this project out of the stash and decided to finish it! I feel that my trip to MD and running into other knit mommies should prove that there is life after baby! So go ahead and get yourself a baby. Ok, maybe that's not such a good idea for everyone, but it's just a thought.

Well for me it's Maryland Sheep and Wool or Burst.

I'm (hopefully) heading down to MDS&W on Saturday with my SIL lfor some yarn-buying, alpaca-petting, potato-ribbon-eating, bloggy-friend-reuniting, fun times.

I am really excited to go and fondle the Brook's Farm and Tess yarns. It's crazy to think that I was at MDS&W having a hella good time with some great people two years ago and how much has happened since then. At that time I was probably blogging multiple times a week and had many knitting projects going on at once. I felt really connected to the whole knit blogging community (although there were many people at the MDS&W blogger meet-up that I didn't know). Since then I've blogged less and noticed that some of the same people I hung out with at MDS&W have also slowed down their postings - some having babies, some getting married, and some just plain busy! It makes me think we're all on some kind of blogging cycle.

It's been an effort to post for me, but I've been getting more and more free time on a regular basis now that Baby Lug is 1 and things are a little less crazy. We (read Mr Lug) are working on converting to WordPress soon, which is exciting for me since I've been on here with this same site design for a few years. Look for a recap on Baby Lug's first birthday party as well as a general update over the next few days...

See you in MD!

Inventing a dish at that wedding called pigamari. That's where you take pork from a roast pig and put it on your plate with calimari. It's delicious. Believe me.

Watching the first episode of The Tudors on demand. Jonathan Rhys Myers you've come a long way from Bend it Like Beckham. Man there's a lot of banging in that show. I also watched 300 on cable the other night. Those Spartans sure did work out a lot.

Researching a new car. I drive a Beetle right now and getting Baby Lug in and out of the back seat of that thing is ridiculous. It's like a clown car. So mom-sedan here I come. I thought about getting a crossover vehicle, but we already have one of those, and something tells me I'd feel like I was clubbing baby seals if I came home to two CUVs in the driveway.

Attending wedding showers. I have 5 weddings this year to go to (2 down so far) and at least one pregnant friend right now, so I think I see a lot of showers in my future.

Working. Lots of working. But that helps with that whole new car thing.

Chasing this guy around. He has the fuzziest head of hair ever and he's a few weeks away from walking, I'm pretty sure.

Switching my blog over to Wordpress. Well actually Mr. Lug is doing that for me, but I have to find a theme I like.

Eating tons of crap food and then declaring that I'm going to go on a diet, pretty much every week.

So I don't blog as often as I used to, right? So imagine my surprise when Potter Craft emailed me and offered to send me some books they were publishing and told me they linked to my blog. Let's say really surprised. This blog has had it's advantages for me. I get to imagine that people think I'm funny. I have gotten to meet some pretty cool people because of it, and now - knitting books. Yay blog!

So the first book I got wasTwinkle's Weekend Knits by designer Wenlan Chia. She is also the author of Twinkle's Big City Knits, and the designer behind the Twinkle line of clothing and yarn.

I combed through it and found a lot of patterns I'd like to try out. The styling in the photos is pretty cool, but not totally out of reach. Many of the projects truly do seem like they'd only take a weekend to knit (well for me, a weekend away from home to knit) since many of the patterns use super bulky yarn. There are really great looking patterns for interesting scarves that only take two skeins of her Twinkle Soft Chunky Yarn. I particularly like the Peony Scarf - a bulky petal pink scarf with looped fringe that resembles the flower. There are also several sweater patterns that use the super bulky yarn that are also appealing, and according to the author - flattering, so those are pretty intriguing to me as well. The one I'm most interested in? The Nimbus Sweater, a tight, white sweater with a funnel neck and clever shaping.

Twinkle's Soft Chunky yarn seems to run about $20 a skein which would make a sweater using 6 skeins a little out of my price range, but if I could find a suitable substitute, I'd definitely try out these patterns.

We've been in this house since about June of 2006. So about a year and a half. One of the first things we did when we moved in was remove all the window treatments the former owner so kindly left for us. The former owner was obviously handy with a sewing machine - a better seamstress than myself. Her taste however, differed greatly from mine. The house was filled with voluminous balloon valences, lacy sheers, and, well, more balloon valences. Most of these treatments looked like they were made years ago and never cleaned.

Ever.

Taking them down was a huge improvement, and we put up temporary paper blinds. Note the word temporary. Up until a few weeks ago, they were still up on 90% of our windows.

I've made curtains before, and thought I'd eventually get to making them for this house. I gave up in the baby's room and our bedroom and dropped money on pre-made treatments. But I decided to make a curtain for the hall bath and curtains for the office.

I have a love-hate relationship with sewing. I took home-ec in high school. I made a pair of shorts and some pillows that spelled out "Jenny." I vaguely remember the steps of cutting the pattern, tracing the lines with a wheely thing and some kind of carbon paper. Then basting the pieces and sewing them. In my adult attempts at sewing I rarely follow any of these steps, and that may explain why almost everything I've sewn turns out wonky.

For the hall bath I purchased 2 yards of striped home decorator fabric. I cut the fabric in half width-wise (I don't think that you're really supposed to make curtains that way. I'm guessing you're supposed to make two panels with the entire width of fabric.), hemmed the sides, the bottom, and made a pocket at the top for the rod. I thought it turned out well and matches our bathroom. And now people can't see us pee. And really, what more can you ask for in a curtain?

I also made two pairs of these curtains with remnant home decorator fabric I bought a year ago. Same sort of technique, but I added about a 18 inches of linen-like material to the ends. These turned out better than I anticipated.

I didn't pin these, or measure them. I very haphazardly held them up to the window, guessed the length and did a lot of ironing to set the hem so I'd know where to sew. Both these projects took me about an hour and I'd guess that with the fabric being on sale, cost me under $50.

We only have one set of paper shades left, and I think I have a trip to the home store in my future, because I am all sewn out.

And because I can't post without one, here's a picture of Baby Lug. Oh hey, and there's me too if you forget what I look like. (Yes, he's wearing Atlanta Falcons pajamas. They were on sale. No he does not like the Falcons, or condone dog fighting.)

The pattern is from a booklet Knitting for Babies that I picked up in the supermarket. The pattern was called "Baby Cabled Cardigan." Yarn is Patons Classic Merino Wool.

I started knitting this cardigan when I was pregnant. I had a lot of trouble knitting when I was pregnant. I'd do a few rows and have to stop. I picked this back up when I had jury duty* earlier this week. It was a good knit to work on while waiting to be called up. The pattern is just interesting enough to keep going. I prefer baby sweaters knit in one piece. I have a thing about baby clothes - they're going to get puked on, pooped on, and snotted on - so I can't put too much effort into them.

This is most likely way too small for Baby Lug, so it'll either go away for the next time, or get gifted to an expecting friend. All it needs is a zipper and it'll be ready to go!

On a completely unrelated note, can someone please explain to me how Ricky is still on Project Runway? Could he cry MORE? And how much do I love Christian? He's the best.

If you're curious, I did get called into court as they selected a jury. They picked the jurors on either side of me to serve. It was a narrow escape. Now I'm done for three years. Not a bad deal.

One of the great joys of having a child? Germs. I got hit HARD with the snot bug from Baby Lug. It was a knock-down, drag-out war between the snot and me, but then I pulled out my secret weapon, my plasma sword if you will (if you get that reference, we can be friends) of antibiotics and I've now won. Well, I'm winning the war, let's say.

But I actually have knitting to post! A few weeks ago I bound off Lady Eleanor. I started her in August of 2006 (ugh) and just finished her in December. She was a labor of love. It's a really great and easy pattern, good for memorizing and mindless TV knitting. She's knit in Noro Silk Garden. I have to figure out how many skeins I used. The only thing left to do is weave in the ends and figure out whether I'll do the fringe or chunky tassels.

Christmastime with an 8-month-old meant...blockading the tree, trips to see Santa, and the question of whether or not an 8-month-old needed gifts. We want his birthday and Christmas to be special to him, but don't really want him to have a pile of plastic character toys under the tree, and dread the days when he'll be watching cartoons and falling victim to advertising aimed at his little mind and my wallet.

Also, the current smack-you-in-the-face environmental issue seems to be lead paint in children's toys. Having a little guy that likes to chew on everything, this is a concern for us. Maybe we're lucky that his favorite thing to play with is a plastic Solo cup from the kitchen. However, it was Christmastime and though he didn't know Christmas Morning from any other morning, we did want him to have some gifts to open.

We decided to buy some environmentally-friendly and hopefully lead-paint-free baby toys. We found two really cute ones - this pull along hippo by Melissa and Doug:

and this Skwish wooden toy by Manhattan Toys:

We also have a lot of recycled toys from friends that I hope we saved from a landfill. By the way what happens to all of those toys with lead paint? I suppose they end up as trash too! Anyway - you can find most of these wooden toys on Amazon or Learning Express.

A lengthy 2007 retrospective is called for here, but the year can pretty much be summed up by one thing:

Life became very baby-centric for Mr. Lug and I. I spent three gloriously tiring months on maternity leave, went back to work, and put Baby Lug in daycare. Weekends spent dining in fun restaurants with friends were replaced with Saturday trips to Target or Babies 'r Us to spend asinine amounts of money on baby items. I loved every minute of it. This little guy has been the best thing ever, and I feel like there wasn't a time before he was here, if that makes sense.

It was a really busy year: Three friends had babies; I worked a lot and got a promotion; Mr. Lug got a new job; we did a lot of work to the house...We even squeezed in some fun times!

2008 should be even busier with at least 4 weddings coming up and another friend with a baby on the way!

I have a few goals for this year (I like goals better than resolutions) and am willing to share these: blog more, knit more, and try to have real connections with people I care about more often.

Happy and healthy new year to everyone!

Every year I can't wait until Christmas is here and every year I am so happy when it's over and I can get back to my normal ho-hum days! Since Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fell on Monday and Tuesday I took off of work Wednesday through Friday. I couldn't wait to spend the days hanging out with the baby and not doing much else. Well, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I thought the baby was acting kind of funny and the cough he's had for weeks seemed a little worse, but hey, there was a lot of excitement for him.

Then Wednesday he slept all day.

And had a fever.

Of 101.8 degrees.

So Thursday we went to the doctor and it turns out Baby Lug had a respiratory infection. They gave us a nebulizer and a prescription for albuterol and sent us on our way. The albuterol really helped Baby Lug breathe better and his fever broke. He seems to be on the mend. With one exception.

This s*** is like baby crack!

The medicine has turned my normally-sweet baby into Tyrone Biggums. He's practically knocking over convenience stores after he has his treatment. He has wicked mood swings from happy and laughing to all-out-Exorcist-type tantrums. The medicine even comes in vials folks! And the nebulizer - a baby crack pipe! No kidding!

I'm titrating down his dose so that my sweet baby will return and Tyrone Biggums will go home...

Lucy Van Pelt: I know how you feel about all this Christmas business, getting depressed and all that. It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want. I always get a lot of stupid toys or a bicycle or clothes or something like that.
Charlie Brown: What is it you want?
Lucy Van Pelt: Real estate

Christmastime means a few different things to me: ornaments, food, and action movies. It doesn't have much to do with the presents anymore, or sadly, putting the Christ back in Christmas. It pretty much stopped being about the presents the year I turned 11 or 12 and didn't get a single toy. And Santa, well I was never really about Santa - I think I new at 5 that it was a farce and I couldn't sit on his lap because the mall Santa scared me. Plus the mall Santa was a lady, and that just didn't seem right to me.

One of my favorite Christmas movies is on right now.

Die Hard.

I think the fact that Professor Snape was in Die Hard is part of why I like the Snape character so much. That and I find his slick evil persona appealing, but that is neither here nor there. John Maclane is very Christmas-y to me. The only thing I can say in German is "schieß auf das fenster!" Does anyone else find Professor Snape oddly appealing or is it just me? Maybe it's the grown up manifestation of my teenage obsession with the Cure?

My dad is a big fan of action movies and every year we usually watch a new one after Christmas Eve dinner. Sometimes we diversify and watch something like Pirates of the Carribean, but usually there is some sort of car chase, gun fight, or perhaps sword play involved. We'll miss it this year as we'll probably be driving down to the in-law's during prime action movie viewing time.

Anyway - Die Hard is a good movie. Really. And Snape - Yeah I dig him.
